What are the recommended technical specifications my PC needs to run BPP Learn Online?

This is what we recommend as a minimum. However, it may be possible to view BPP Online with a computer that has specifications that aren't at this level. If you have problems please check your computer by clicking on Start and then right-clicking on My Computer. Select Properties ... . You'll see the processor speed and RAM.

To see the screen resolution and screen colours click on Start and then on Control Panel. Next, click on Change the screen resolution. This will display a window that shows the resolution of your computer and the screen colours. BPP does not recommend you change any of these settings without first contacting your company's IT department if you're using a work computer.

  • Windows XP or higher
  • Processor: 800 MHz or higher
  • Memory: 128MB RAM or higher
  • Screen resolution: 1024x768 or higher
  • Screen colours: 32 bit (high colour) or higher

Unfortunately the Interactive Modules and the Online Tests will not run properly on Apple Macs.

Do I need any additional software to run BPP Learn Online?

Yes, you do. We recommend you use either Intenet Explorer 6/7 or Mozilla Firefox 2/3 browsers. For each browser you'll need to have the Adobe Flash plugin to view all full tutorials. This is usually pre-installed but if you run into problems please follow the instructions on screen.

It should also be configured to allow JavaScript and Active X controls.

The MP3 tutorials will play in your browser. However, if you wish to download them you'll need software such as iTunes or Windows Media Player to play them offline on your computer.

This is also the case for the tutorials in MV4 format that have been designed specifically for hand held devices such as the iPod video.

BPP Learn Online does not support AOL Explorer at this time.

I have a 3G modem and am having problems accessing Learning Modules, what can i do?

Unfortunately the interactive learning modules will not work with 3G modems

My browser freezes, and/or logs me out

You will have a session of up to 2 hours after which you will have to login again. If this happens, you can log back in and start from where you left off. The system is designed so that any link such as MP3 and MP4 downloads, exams, PDFs etc - all open in separate browsers. It is so that you can open up multiple links at the same time. However, it is advised to clear your internet cache before logging on and to try not to have too many browser windows open for the best performance. Too many windows open and also having different sites in multiple windows can cause your browser cache/history to become full and your browser will become overloaded and freeze. If this happens, you still have the option of logging back in and continuing from the point you left off, although we advise you to clear you internet cache, close all browsers and then open a browser to re-login for a fresh start to avoid it happening again. Having just one instance (one window) of the system open will allow for best performance.

What if I have any other questions?

Viewing online tutorials

I've clicked on the link to launch an online tutorial but it doesn't load. What do I do?

You need to download and install Adobe Flash player plug-in. Go to the Adobe Flash plug-in download page and follow the instructions to install the plug-in.

I can't see the whole of an online tutorial on my screen. What should I do?

You need to increase the screen resolution to a minimum of 1024x768. On a Windows operating system the easiest way to change this is to minimize open windows so you can see the desktop. Next, right-click and select Properties from the menu. Click on the Settings tab and change your screen resolution to 1024x768.

Viewing Interactive Financial Maths modules

Do I need any additional software to view the Interactive Financial Maths tutorials?

Yes, you'll need to install into your browser the Macromedia Authorware plug-in. On this page you can select whether you need to install for Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers.

Should I use a particular browser?

The tutorials will run on Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x and above, Netscape 4.x and above and Firefox 1.x and above. However, you won't be able to use Safari to view them.

I can not open the Interactive Modules.  I get an ‘error loading’ or ‘access denied’ error message, or a blank screen

This is most likely because you don’t have the Macromedia Authorware plug-in installed, which is required to run the learn modules, and your PC is failing to automatically download it.  Most of the time this is because users are running Windows Vista and their protection mode is blocking it.  The other reason is because they are using a work PC and they don’t have admin rights to download it.

Are you using Windows Vista?  If so, Windows Vista and IE7 feature a new ‘Protected Mode’ which is a very strict security model and block almost everything that tries to write locally to your hard disk. You will need to either add the following sites to your trusted list or just turn off Protected Mode completely:

www.bpp.com

www.adobe.com

www.macromedia.com

Instructions for how to do this are available here: http://www.vistaclues.com/disable-protected-mode/

If you are trying to access it from an employer’s PC, then you need to inform your IT people that you are trying to download and install Macromedia Authorware, and they will need to let it pass through their firewall and install it on to your machine.

Lastly, there are a few more reasons as to why this might not work

1)      Javascript is not enabled on the client computer

2)      Active X has no permission to run on the client computer

These two are the main reasons other than the compatibility and missing
plug ins. Please allow Javascript and Active X via the
Internet Options on your browser.

Listening to audio downloads

How do I download the audio files?

Right click on the title of the MP3 and select 'Save target as' option from the menu. Browse to the location you wish to save the file and click on the Save button.

For Macs:
Hold down the Ctrl key and click the MP3 link. Select 'Download linked file' and the file download process should begin. Once the file has downloaded, look for the file in your download folder, this is usually your desktop.

Help! I can't hear anything when I play the audio download. What do I do?

Please check the following:

  • Do you have a sound card installed?
  • Are your volume settings correct? If you have Windows XP you can check this by going to Start > settings > Control Panel and double clicking on the sound and audio devices icon. On the volume tab make sure that mute is not checked. Click on the Advanced button on the volume tab and make sure that the volume is set to high in the volume control section.
  • Check that your speaker cables and headphones are plugged into the correct socket and have not come loose.

When I click on the link to play the MP3 it doesn't load? What should I do?

Please make sure you have software installed that can play MP3s such as Windows Media Player or QuickTime.

Viewing video downloads

How do I download the video files?

Right click on the title of the MP4 and select 'Save target as' option from the menu. Browse to the location you wish to save the file and click on the Save button.

For Macs:
Hold down the Ctrl key and click the MP4 link. Select Download linked file and the file download process should begin. Once the file has downloaded, look for the file in your download folder, this is usually your desktop.

I can't hear anything when I play the video download. Do I need additional software to play it?

You will need software to play MV4 files such as Windows Media Player or QuickTime. If you are using an iPod then you will need iTunes to download the MV4 file onto your video iPod.

The MP4 downloads arent working on my iPod

You need to check whether your iPod model is compatible with MP4 or M4V files.  If your iPod can play these then you need to import the file into iTunes and then sync your iPod to your computer and load the file on to it, in much the same way you add MP3s.  If you are having issues with playing the MP4 or M4V presentations on your iPod once downloaded then you will need to contact Apple support for further advice.  However, if you believe there is a problem with the M4V/MP4 file itself, then please let us know so we can check it.

Taking a Test

How do I take one of BPP's tests?

Each test is represented by a green computer icon. Open the test by clicking the link. You'll see a pre-launch screen that explains how to display the next or previous question, how to review the questions you have or haven't answered and the differences between the close and finish buttons. You select an answer by choosing the radio button next to the options provided.

Once you have answered as many questions as you can you should click the finish button. This then allows you to check which answers were correct and view the feedback provided by BPP. If you are in the middle of a test and don't have time to finish it, clicking close will allow you to return to the test at a later date. To continue taking the test you need to click the Review link that appears once there are completed or interrupted tests.

If you disagree with the answer provided or need to discuss it further, click the link in the top right of the question page. This will open an email for you with the email subject pre-populated with the question ID.
